On April 17 1935 a group of 75 people gathered at the hotel Krasnapolsky in Amsterdam with the idea to go painting together at some evenings.
This is how The Amsterdam Art Club ‘The Sunday Painters’ came into being, which now has grown into a large, active association with 500 members.

From Monday to Saturday, the most beautiful art is created in their own studio, in the heart of Amsterdam. These sessions are guided by several enthusiastic professional artists.
There are now about 25 groups active with drawing, painting, printing techniques and sculpting. Not only advanced students, but also beginners are welcome at The Sunday Painters!

Every first Sunday of the month a ‘Portrait on Sunday’ session is organized. A well-known inhabitant of Amsterdam is a guest as a model. Several writers, actors and politicians (including some Amsterdam mayors) have already posed.
Activities such as lectures and painting days in the open air, like in the Amsterdam Zoo, are also popular with the members. During the summer break of three months, various workshops and summer courses are offered.

A special activity is the annual painting trip aboard the lovely motor passenger ship Amsterdam. The ship sails for a week across the most beautiful regions of the Netherlands. In picturesque port towns the pencils and brushes come out to create some attractive works.
This painting group has been a special guest on the ship for about 25 years in a row! The crew now knows that the creative process makes hungry and provides a delicious meal three times a day. In the evening, while enjoying a drink, the work of the day is discussed!
And then at night in the ship’s cabin a wonderful dream will come about a new sailing and painting adventure on the next day!

A super fun concept: Painting and Sailing. In this way the Sunday Painters have explored many waterways and regions in the Netherlands.
The same concept can also be rolled out in Belgium and France where HAT Tours offers some attractive journeys. The tour ‘Living the Seine River’ (link: https://hat-tours.com/en/tour/living-the-seine-river-2018/) leads from places where impressionists like Van Gogh and Sisley got their inspiration and to the 19th century heart of Paris!
Starting in the art city of Ghent an inspiring route to the emperor city of Compiègne in France has been mapped out.

Are you inspired by this all? May the activities of your association or group also be linked to a sailing trip? HAT Tours has many ideas for you!
