The Lorraine is a rolling fertile region between the rivers Moselle and Meurthe and is an ideal area to explore by bike & barge. This unique 7-day Cycling & Sailing Holiday with a stay aboard the hotel ship La Belle Fleur takes you along old towpaths and new cycle lanes.
With the right mix of culture and nature this holiday will give you a very good impression of this interesting region.
Saturday: Cycling ± 15 km
This tour starts in the village of Wasserbillig situated on the border of Luxembourg and Germany. Around 15.00 hours the crew of the La Belle Fleur welcomes you aboard.
You make a short bike ride along the Sure, a tiny stream that flows into the river Moselle near the mooring place of the ship.
Sunday: Cycling ± 35 km
After breakfast, you will cycle to the pearl of the river Moselle, Remich.
On the way you can visit the small village of Ehnen with its wine museum. After a walk through the old streets and narrows alleys, you can continue your bike tour to the old roman villa in Nennig, where you can be amazed by the beautiful and well-kept tiles.
Monday: Cycling ± 40 km
After breakfast you leave Remich, to cycle to the first bigger city in France, Thionville..The bicycle lanes will take you through 3 countries: Luxemburg, Germany and of course France. On theway you can stop shortly to visit the castle at Sierck-les-Bains, from where you will have some wonderful views. A little detour to visit some of the bunkers of the former Maginot line situated in the woods around Cattenom, is worthwhile.
Thionville became rich by the metal industry. The many beautiful buildings speak of this flourishing period.
Tuesday: Cycling ± 35 km
Cycling along the river Moselle, you can enjoy the industrial heritage and cycle along shady paths to the beautiful city of Metz. In the evening an interesting walk is programmed. Especially the magnificent cathedral is worth seeing! The many pavement cafes invite you to have a relaxing drink.
Wednesday: Cycling ± 55 km or 25 km
Towpaths along the Moselle bring you to the quiet French village of Frouard. If today you prefer to cycle a little less today you first sail along with the barge to Pont-à-Mousson and start from there.
Thursday: Cycling ± 30 km
Following a connecting channel between the rivers Moselle and Meurthe, the route leads along several lovely locks to the city of Nancy. You find lots of beautiful Art Nouveau buildings. The famous Palais Stanislas is one of the architectural highlights. After a visit to the town you continue to Liverdun, an old garnizon town. La Belle Fleur is moored at an idyllic spot.
Friday: Cycling ± 20 km
After breakfast you depart for a short bike ride to the town of Toul, a small charming fortified town on thebanks of the river Moselle Your cycling trip ends in here, after an afternoon coffee on deck the crew of La Belle Fleur says goodbye.
Each next week this tour is in reverse order and starts in Toul.
